Granting that hygiene is not an issue here, there are several causes why you can have an unpleasant vaginal odor. The vagina is inhabited by different types of bacteria. The vagina is highly acidic and this condition prevents the different bacteria from overpowering each other thus maintaining a balance that prevents infection.
The smell of your vagina actually indicates its state of health. A healthy vagina actually has quite pleasant odor. An odorous vagina indicates that it has, normally, an infection. What are the usual vaginal infections?
Bacterial Vaginosis - This is not a sexually transmitted disease. It is caused by an imbalance in the numerous bacteria in the vagina. The imbalance causes a fishy smell and some grayish secretion come out of the vagina. Oral antibiotics are the normal course of treatment.
Yeast Infection - The vaginal fungal infection is highly treatable. There are vaginal suppositories that can be inserted into the vagina for a one-dose treatment. Although not as odorous as bacterial vaginosis, the infection is offensive smelling too.
Chlamydia - It is a sexually transmitted disease much like gonorrhea. It is quite a common disease that affects about 4 million women a year. The STD is highly treatable bacterial infection. A single dose of azythromycin can eradicate the infectious bacteria. It is noteworthy to learn that the use of condoms do not and cannot protect you from acquiring STDs.
Genital Herpes - This is a viral infection by the herpes simplex virus that can be transmitted by the mouth, the vagina or the genital skin. Once infected, a recurrence can happen any time. There are more than 50 million Americans infected with genital HSV. It is believed that 60% of sexually active adults carry the virus. There is no known cure for genital herpes but there are medications to shorten outbreaks.
